Individual bolt load cells, known as DTIs, measure pretension created during tightening regardless of the bolt's torque resistance. A DTI is placed on one end of a bolt and tightened until the bumps are crushed to the point where a feeler gauge cannot be inserted all the way around, or until the Squirter® DTI has appropriately squirted out silicone. DTIs are fully independent of the bolt assembly's torque resistance, and because the compression of the DTI bumps can be seen, bolt installers are less likely to leave bolts with insufficiently compressed DTIs.
